BMMC Rider Training Newsletter

January 2009

1. Safety Meeting: Chris Christner’s main topic, using a visualization with a couple of club members, was to reemphasize the correct method of applying your brakes in various situations. To quickly summarize…

· Keep aware of your surroundings as the situations are constantly changing.
· Look for “clues” as you progress down the road such as car blinkers, traffic signals changing, and driver inattention.
· Realize that intersections are the most dangerous places for motorcyclists.
· Guard your brakes as the situation warrants.
· Anticipate brake application.
· Apply by gradually increasing pressure until the bike is stopped or slowed to an appropriate speed. Never just grab a fistfull/footfull of brake unless you are prepared for the consequences.

2. Several BMMC’ers have already this year taken advantage of T.E.A.M. Arizona’s Experienced Rider’s Course to prepare for the upcoming riding season.

If you’d like to do the same, you can sign-up online as easy as 1-2-3. The cost is nominal for the terrific training and practice you receive. You can find them at http://www.motorcycletraining.com/. Just follow the prompts to the course you want to take.

3. During this month’s meeting you were introduced to BMMC’s newest addition to motorcycle riding… the no-pressure, turn-key, ride when you want 500 mile and 1000 mile rides. These eight packages (four 500 and four 1000 packages, each containing preplanned routes, maps, turn by turn information, hotel suggestions, and GPS data) are posted on the club website. All you have to do is decide which one(s) you’d like to try, download the package, gas your bike, and go.

4. This month’s Safety Topic deals with what you should know about riding on
dirt or gravel roads. We hope you find it useful and interesting.

As always, Ride Smart and thanks for your time.

BMMC Director of Rider Training
