    April 2009

    1.  At the April meeting several BMMC members were singled out and congratulated for completing the AZ 4-Corners Tour (13 members) and the AZ 4-Borders Tour (2 members). Each was greeted with applause and given a beautifully designed Tour T-Shirt. These were the first finishers of the Tours and several “lessons learned” were passed on. A few of them follow:

●Wait until late April and beyond to do this (due to low temps and varied weather conditions, to include snow).

●Make sure you and your bike are up for the task (there is a lot of riding - averaging about 300 miles/day).

●Pack for all types of weather (you very easily could experience it all).

●Ride your own pace and be comfortable with it (plan numerous gas/bio stops to stave off fatigue).

●Make sure each rider knows the routes, the food stops and the hotel locations (lowers the anxiety rate should you get separated).

●Expect to be tired, maybe even a little saddle sore, at the end of the day (think Advil and Monkey Butt powder).

●Plan motels where you can park your bikes right outside your door (for security, and enhances the closeness of a social gathering).

●Expect to laugh, and laugh, and laugh (this is a social ride, friendships are forged and fun is mandatory).

●Take lots of pictures (memories are forever!).

    2. Sometimes the “atmosphere” out on the roads, whether riding or driving, isn’t as friendly as we’d all like. Everyone is operating with their own agenda in mind and they don’t always mix well. In a perfect world we’d all be smiles all the time and we’d all be friendly to everyone we share the road with, but… This month’s safety topic is “Road Rage”. It is approached from several angles that you may not have thought about before. Hope you find it informative and useful.

As always, thanks for your time. Ride friendly.

    BMMC Director of Rider Training
