Last year during the planning process for the 2010 Calendar, we were looking for an event that would incorporate something new, something creative and would be tons of fun! Ruthie Salant & Charlene Merta came to the committee and said; how about a Barnyard Pitch `N` Putt Western BBQ Event. Wow!! Talk about covering all the bases, this event had it all.

On Saturday afternoon, October 9th, seventy excited members dressed in their best western attire meandered over to Ruthie’s spread to enjoy the Barnyard Pitch `N` Putt Western BBQ.

Upon arrival the guests were greeted by their host’s and committee and were given the rules of play for the afternoon Pitch `N` Putt contest. Each committee couple was responsible for designing and creating one of the nine holes. Each hole had a theme, complete with signs, props, and challenging hazards. The guests were assigned to one of nine groups and were dispatched to one of the nine holes in preparation for the shotgun start. It was a warm beautiful afternoon as the members assaulted the course in anticipation of their group coming in as first place winners.

The teams found the course to be challenging, however, there was plenty of laughter as guests tried to master built in hazards like putting with a toilet plunger, hitting marshmallows for the longest drive, chipping into a “kiddy pool”, teeing off while straddling a saddle, or Ruthie’s Motorcycle, just to name a few. All of this hard work and laughter produced a powerful thirst that drove the players to the J & J HO HOUSE SALOON, (see slideshow), to enjoy an ice cold beer, or a tall glass of refreshing wine.

As the competition heated up, and the sun set slowly in the west and the beverages flowed freely, the increase in the excitement level could be heard for miles. (It’s a good thing that Ruthie is friendly with her neighbors). As the guests completed the course, they knocked the dust off their boots, and gathered in Ruthie’s luscious backyard to continue the party. While the scores were being tallied, and the Western BBQ was being prepared, the guests had the opportunity to purchase 50/50 Raffle tickets from Peggy & Todd Gerber and take a chance on the Wheel of Fortune, manned by John & Nancy Logsdon.

Charlene & Ruthie announced that the chuck wagon was open and invited their guests to take advantage of the delicious Western BBQ Dinner, complete with all of the goodies. The food was delicious and there was plenty of it.

Following dinner and an abundant assortment of desserts, the guests moved to the dance floor to enjoy some country western & rock & roll music provided by the evening’s DJ. It was then time to announce the winners of the Pitch `N` Putt Contest. Charlene called out the winning names, and Ruthie distributed the prizes to the happy winners. Todd & Peggy Gerber then called out the winning numbers for the evening’s 50/50 raffle.

The music was cranked up and some guests returned to the dance floor, while others enjoyed warm conversations with good friends.

All of the participating members would like to extend their sincere appreciation to Ruthie Salant, Charlene & Dan Merta, and Dan Wood for hosting this fabulous new and exciting event. Of course, an additional thank you to Ruthie for opening up her beautiful home for our enjoyment and pleasure.

As hard as they worked, the hosts would not have been able to produce this exciting event without a tremendous amount of support from their dedicated committee. The committee members assisted with the preparation of the event, and created and designed the Pitch `N` Putt Course. Outstanding Job!!!

Ruthie & Charlene would like to acknowledge the following committee members and thank them for their contributions, participation, and creativity.
