This past Saturday, October 27^th, twenty-one BMMC Ride Captains and two prospective Captains joined Ride Captain Coordinator, Tom Clements for the 2^nd annual Ride Captains’ Training Event.

The BMMC Captains gathered at 8:30 am at Harold’s, Cave Creek. Over coffee, Tom reviewed the BMMC Rider’s Guide and Ride Captain Guide with the attendees. Part of Tom’s “chalk talk” was a Pop Quiz reviewing the data in the two guides.

Following the training session, the Captains were given their group assignments and duties. There were three groups of riders with a Captain leading, and sweeping. Tom had arranged for several of the Ride Captains’ to be placed as “plants” in the groups and they were given specific assignments to role play that were not in compliance with the Rider’s Guide.

The three groups headed toward Payson with a stop at Hwys. #87 and #188 for a break and to switch leaders and sweeps. At the rest stop, Tom had each group discuss what they had observed, and any problems that they had experienced. The new leads and sweeps then led the group to the Payson Airport for lunch.

While the Ride Captains’ enjoyed a club sponsored lunch, Tom had each group once again review their experiences and observations. Tom also took the opportunity to identify the “plants” in each group and had them explain their assignments. The “plants” proved to be an excellent exercise in improving the observation skills of the leaders and sweeps.

All of the Captains felt that the training event was well structured and provided valuable information and hands on training that improved their skills as Ride Captains.
